Other Conditions:  The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa invites applications for an endowed chair in Housing Policy, Economics and Planning. The position is a joint appointment in the Dept of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) and the University of Hawai‘i Economic Research Organization (UHERO) in the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) with tenure base in DURP, beginning August 1, 2018, contingent on position clearance and availability of funds. We are accepting applications at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As the Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corporation (HCRC) Chair in Affordable Housing, the faculty member will develop a research agenda in the area of housing policy, economics and planning with a focus on affordability.
  • The faculty member will publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in areas of expertise;
  • Seek extramural funding to support this research agenda;
  • Deliver research results and policy implications to stakeholders, the broader community, policy makers and planners through targeted consultation and outreach consistent with the DURP and UHERO missions;
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on housing economics, policy and planning in DURP;
  • Supervise and mentor MA and PhD students; and
  • Provide service to the department, research unit, and the university.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in economics, planning, public policy, geography or closely related field from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalent.
  • A record of scholarly achievement, demonstrated ability to effectively teach, mentor, and advise students in the applicant’s area of research.
  • An active research agenda in housing policy, economics, or planning.
  • Experience with policy related outreach.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications  

  • In addition to the minimum qualifications of the Assistant Professor rank,
  • An established publication record and research agenda in housing topics;
  • Experience with high-impact, academic, extramurally funded research and outreach;
  • Four (4) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent with evidence of increasing professional maturity;
  • Documentation of high quality teaching performance with demonstrated ability to mentor and advise students in the applicant’s area of research;
  • Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities;
  • Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or similar institution.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • In addition to the minimum qualifications of the Associate Professor rank,
  • Four (4) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to raise extramural funds and lead funded research.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute in a leadership role in the DURP, UHERO, and in the discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, community organizations, and policy makers in cooperative, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors.
  • Ability to develop a collaborative research program on housing topics, with an emphasis on affordability.
  • Research background in housing economics.
