Junior or Assistant Data Specialist

The University of Hawai`i Economic Research Organization (UHERO) in the Social Science Research Institute, College of Social Sciences invites applications for a Junior or Assistant Specialist (position 0084643), full-time, tenure track, general funds, beginning November 30, 2015, pending position clearance and availability of funds.

Duties: Provide expert leadership for the UHERO Analytics team—a group of staff, graduate research assistants and undergraduate interns that develop and maintain all of UHERO’s custom database systems; design, build and maintain custom data and web applications; and develop and deploy best-in-class visualizations, dashboards and other innovative methods to produce high-impact research outreach. Develop and teach a new undergraduate service course on Data Analysis and Visualization using R; conduct research and service in congruence with UHERO’s mission and serve as principal investigator on extramurally funded projects.

Minimum qualifications

Junior Specialist: Masters degree in economics, statistics, analytics, or related field from a college or university of recognized standing with one-year experience in statistical analysis and data visualization, including communicating research results via data visualization, dashboards, etc. Experience with software used for statistical analysis such as R, Stata, Matlab, etc. Experience with programming languages commonly used for data scraping, manipulation, and development of data-driven web apps, such as Perl, Python, Ruby, etc. Ability to lead group projects and supervise graduate and undergraduate students. Ability to interpret and present information clearly and accurately in verbal and written reports.

Assistant Specialist: In addition to the Junior Specialist minimum qualifications, 30 credits of graduate study from a college or university of recognized standing in economics, statistics, analytics, or related field; at least three years experience as a Junior Specialist or its equivalent.

Desirable qualifications: Experience working with data sources commonly used in the social sciences such as U.S. Census, Bureau of Economic Analysis, the PSID, etc. Experience with database development and management. Experience with R, D3.js and Rails. Working knowledge of Udaman Ruby on Rails application. Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.

PhD in economics, statistics, analytics, or related field.

Pay Range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
