Steven joined UHERO as an Assistant Professor in 2021. His research examines how distance and scale shape productivity, growth, and regional development, with emphasis on small and isolated economies such as Hawaiʻi. Recent work includes a model of work-from-home that predicts “donut” and “shadow” effects in urban systems; an analysis of scale assumptions in growth theory and their spatial implications; and a study of how internal migration affects manufacturing productivity in Vietnam. He is a co-editor for the journal, Spatial Economic Analysis. Before UHERO he was a Senior Research Fellow in Economics at Curtin University and held various government, corporate, and consulting roles in Australia and Aotearoa.
