UHERO and the Water Resources Research Center are conducting a study to better understand the long-term social and health outcomes of the Red Hill fuel spill. Specifically, the study focuses on understanding a range of social, economic, and health outcomes as well as how households and communities have responded to the fuel spill and perspectives on what should be done in the future. The team, led by faculty researchers Dr. Ruben Juarez and Dr. Leah Bremer, seek volunteers who completed the previous CDC survey on Red Hill. Per the University of Hawaiʻi research protocol, your identity and responses will be confidential and securely stored at the University of Hawaiʻi.
Participants will receive a $20 Amazon gift card for their participation upon completion of the initial survey, which will ask questions about:
- Contact information, to include name, date of birth, address, race, ethnicity, job, and household information.
- Information about your overall health and symptoms experienced, education, family, home, relationship, behavior, and social life, among others.
- Information about your perceptions of the Red Hill water contamination on your and your family’s well-being.
- Your perceptions on institutional and community response to this issue.
This survey will inform the development of follow-up surveys to continue tracking the long-term impacts and you will have the opportunity to participate pending continuing funding.
We thank you for your time and hope you can help us measure and understand the impacts that this issue has had on the lives of water users.
