The American Community Survey aggregates data in 1- and 5-year intervals. The 5-year intervals aggregate the most survey results and are considered the most accurate.

Occupations

Each occupation is represented by a circle.

Margin of Error

Margins of error are calculated using a 90% confidence interval. The median that is reported is calculated from a sample of the population selected by the American Community Survey. The true median salary of the overall population has a 90% probability of falling within the confidence intervals shown. Confidence intervals tend to be larger where fewer results exist, or where salaries vary widely

Female CI (Confidence Interval)

The orange highlight along the y axis indicates the 90% confidence interval for the median female salary in the highlighted occupation.

Male CI (Confidence Interval)

The blue highlight along the x axis indicates the 90% confidence interval for the median male salary in the highlighted occupation.

Earnings Gap

The line extending from the highlighted occupation to the 45 degree "Equal Pay Line" indicates the magnitude (in dollars) of the difference between the median male salary and the median female salary in a given occupation.

Limitations

Generally, when occupations fall below the 45 degree "Equal Pay Line", half of all males in that occupation earn more than half of all females. When occupations lie above the "Equal Pay Line", half of all females in that occupation earn more than half of all males. However, where confidence intervals are large, we cannot always conclude that these groups are statistically different.

The confidence intervals calculated for each gender in a given occupation. These confidence intervals cannot be combined to calculate a confidence interval for the difference in salary, without recalculating using the disaggregated survey results

Details

Occupations

Each occupation is represented by a circle.

Position

The position of each circle indicates the median male wage (on the x axis) and the median female wage (on the y axis).

Size

The area of each circle indicates the number of full-time and year-round civilian employees that were at least 16 years old.

Color

Circles are colored to indicate the gender mix in a given occupation category. A blue circle indicates a male dominated occupation group, while an orange circle indicates a female dominated occupation group. Gray circles indicate a relatively even split

Source

Median wages and margins of error are taken from the American Community Survey via US Census Bureau. Table S2402 and Table S2412.

Limitations

Median wages do not control for factors which may affect wages such as the level of education, experience, job-specific duties, etc.

Estimates of population, and hence number of jobs, are not comparable across 2009 and 2010 for the ACS 1-Year estimates (details).

ACS 2005-2009 occupation groups combine some groups from earlier surveys. In 2010, the ACS codes changed dramatically. For details see the crosswalk provided by the Census.

* This visualization has not controlled for factors such as worker education levels, experience, job-specific duties, etc. which may explain a significant portion of the observed gap.
