Climate Adaptation

Hawaiʻi’s beaches are central to our economy and way of life, and are increasingly threatened by coastal erosion and sea level rise. Decision makers and communities face tough decisions on how to respond to rising sea levels, and in particular, whether and how to retreat from coastlines to protect people and our valued beaches. UHERO Environment collaborates with the Institute of Sustainability and Resilience to evaluate the diverse values of coastlines and assess the costs and benefits of various adaptation and retreat strategies.

In addition to a focus on sea level rise, UHERO also has a long history of working on greenhouse gas mitigation and alternative energy policy.
